We Made it to the Land of Fire and Ice

We made it safely to Iceland in the wee hours of the morning after our overnight flight that left from Chicago.  The flight was easy, but it left at a sort of weird time to make everyone sleep and we all agreed the flight was hot and uncomfortable.  Even with little to no sleep, we hit the ground running this morning.
We caught an early shuttle to pick up our home on wheels for the week, the Sharky family truckster!  It's a bit beat down and very tiny, but we're already getting used to where things go and love having the whole crew all in the same space, which doesn't happen much at home these days.
In order to see as much as possible over the next 10 days, we decided to head out to the Golden Circle today.  In researching Iceland, this quick day trip around a few amazing sights near Reykjavik kept popping up in our searches.  It was very crowded with lots of tour groups, but we are so glad we went around the Golden Circle.  The highlights included Thingvellier National Park, Gulfoss Waterfall, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Kerid Crater Lake.  We didn't hike much today, but man, did we do a lot of stairs!  After such little sleep on the flight over, we are all exhausted.
We pulled into a recommended camp ground just before sunset to find that it look to be closed.  However, we found a note on the door saying take any spot you want, so we settled in for the night.  It is such a cool campground!  Really nice warm showers, several playgrounds that the boys had to themselves (the winds from earlier today died down and it became a lovely evening), a common area that had left-over spices, sauces, oil, butter, etc. from other campers to use, and a community dish washing station which was very much appreciated thanks to the little amount of space we have in Sharky.  I was able to barely cook dinner for the six of us on the two burner stove we have (no microwave, no oven...yikes!), so washing dishes at the main house was a really nice perk.
Enjoy these photos from day one.  We're headed to bed with clean bodies and full bellies after a long day!  After a good night of sleep we're headed out tomorrow to see some more amazing sights AND celebrate our big guy's 18th birthday.

Our little "Sharky" home on wheels for the week.

We hiked down to the bottom....and back up too.  Ugh!
