Walking Behind Waterfalls

It feels like every turn here in Iceland leads to another beautiful waterfall, a cool hike, or amazing sights.  Our campground in Vik tonight even had a fireworks show right before bedtime!
We left the Gold Circle this morning after much needed good night of sleep.  I think we all slept for 12+ hours!  We hopped on the main road around Iceland, called the Ring Road or "1" and headed toward Vik.
Our first stop was Seljalandsfoss waterfall, an awesome stop where we suited up in all our rain gear in order to walk behind the water fall.  After that rainy experience, we hikes up a little path to Gljúfrabui, a waterfall inside a cave.  We had to walk in a little creek to get inside the cave, and there was a LOT of spray so we got EXTREMELY wet.  Thank goodness we packed our most waterproof gear from head to toe so we stayed pretty dry, unlike a lot of the other tourist hiking in dress shoes, Ugg boots, and jeans.  I have a few more cool pics of the falls and our trek into the cave, but they are on my DSLR camera so I'll have to upload them later.

Next up was a HUGE waterfall named Skogafoss.  It is a very iconic Iceland waterfall, in fact we saw a couple taking wedding photos in front of it.  How cool!  Drew and Nick hiked up to the top to view the river and two smaller falls that feed into the big drop, but most of us just stayed below and enjoyed the view.

Our last stop for the day was Dyrhólaey Arch.  It is a sea arch surrounded by awesome lava formations on a black sand beach.  The views were amazing but very windy as it's one of the southern most points in Iceland.  Because our RV, Sharky, is large-and-in-charge, we couldn't get up to the best viewing point for the arch.  But, we still saw some pretty cool views at the easier-to-drive-to lookout.

We ended the day in Vik where we stopped at a neat little restaurant called Suður-Vík.  Drew got a traditional Icelandic lamb dinner for his birthday, and the rest of us had some amazing seafood stew and pizza.  Such good food after a day of hikes and amazing sights!  Just as we settled down in Sharky for some chocolate cake and presents, a fireworks show started in downtown Vik.  Very cool indeed!  Happy 18th birthday to Drew, and goodnight from the rest of the Deppe Six Pack.
